History
The building dates from 1642 and there is a historic well by the bar which is in fact an air-shaft for an old copper mine.
The village of Bickerton appears in the Domesday book under the name Bicretone which is of Anglo-Saxon origin meaning 'The farm or settlement of the bee-keeper.'
The area has quite a mining and quarrying history with copper mining recorded in 1696 on Bickerton Hill. Quarrying of sandstone for building and sand for scouring also took place around the hills, particularly around Maiden Castle, from at least the 17th century. Maiden Castle is an Iron Age Fort, sitting atop of one of the Bickerton Hills.
